The agency will be the watchdog of Romanian media over the next weeks during elections. The articles covering the campaign are organized in the archieve below.

The campaign started on October 13 and ends on November 26. If necessary, a second round for presidentials will be hold on December 10.

Over the last days

  • Ion Iliescu is the new president, according to partial poll results made public by two Romanian Tv Stations. Antena 1 Tv Station credited Iliescu with approximately 70% and Corneliu Vadim Tudor with 29%. Moldova county had one of the highest presence to vote.(December 10, Source: BBC)

The Main Candidates for Presidential Seat and Their Parties



Ion Iliescu-PDSR

Ion Iliescu is the president of the main oppostion party- PDSR (The Social-Democracy Romanian Party). Iliescu is supported by his party, as well asPSDR (The Social-Democratic Romanian Party) and PUR (The Romanian Humanistic Party).

Mugur Isarescu-Independent

Mugur Isarescu is Romanian current Prime-Minister and announced he would run for presidentials as independent. Isarescu is strongly supported by CDR 2000 ( Romanian Democratic Alliance)- a new alliance consisting of some of the parties formerly included in the CDR.

Theodor Stolojan-PNL

Theodor Stolojan is the former Romanian Prime-Minister during Iliescu's administration. Stolojan is supported by PNL (National Liberal Party), a party included in CDR which now stands with its own candidate.

Corneliu Vadim Tudor-PRM

Corneliu Vadim Tudor id the president of PRM (Large Romania Party) and is supported by his party at the presidential seat. PRM largely counts on Corneliu Vadim Tudor in general and Gheorghe Funar in Cluj to win Parliamentary seats. PRM has lately accepted Ilie Ilascu as a Senate candidate .

Petre Roman-PD

Petre Roman is the president and candidate of PD (Democratic Party). The Democratic Party won the local elections in Bucharest through its vice-president Traian Basescu, mostly known as a popular figure with a familiar speech.

Gyorgy Frunda-UDMR

UDMR'S (Humgarians' Democratic Union in Romania) vice-president, Gyorg Frunda is also this party's candidate at presidentials. UDMR promotes Gyorg Frunda as it considers no other candidate satisfies the needs of the Union.


  • According to partial results in Romanian presidential elections, no candidate managed to get over 50% and this means a second round is necessary. The results are:

  • The National Council for Securiate's Archives (CNSAS) has made public the list of general elections candidates that were securitate (former political police) collaborators. They are:

  • Prime-minister and presidentials candidate Mugur Isarescu announced an increase in children maintenance from
    65 000 lei(2,5 usd/month) to 130 000 lei (5 usd/month) (November 6, Source: BBC)
  • Marian Munteanu, the candidate of the National Alliance (AN) drops out. Munteanu motivated there are only few youngsters on the lists of this alliance. Marian Munteanu is the former leader of the students in University Square and standed for the AN-an alliance of PUNR and PNR parties. Munteanu was credited with 1% in opinion polls.   • An opinion poll caried out by CURS, IRSOP, and Metromedia Transylvania and published by Mediafax has revealed the following results for political parties and presidential candidates in electors preferences:
    PDSR: 52%; PNL,PRM: 11%; CDR: 7%; PD,UDMR: 6 %

  • Over 20 democratic MP's resigned in Constanta when Bogdan Niculescu Duvaz was put forward for an eligible place in Parliament on the lists of this county.

  • AN (The National Alliance) announced a no-confidence motion against Isarescu cabinet. The motion is supported by PUNR AND PNR.(November 2, Source:BBC)
